Cheshire is one of the most beautiful places in the country to get married. Castles, country houses and rustic barns sit in rolling countryside all over the county. When there's a live band on the plan, though, some rooms make the party far easier than others.
How high the ceiling is, where the stage can go, whether there's a noise limit and when the music has to stop all shape the feel of your evening. As a 9-piece wedding band in Cheshire with a live horn section, we've played barns, estates and castles right across the county. These six are favourites of ours, and below we explain what makes each one such a good fit for live music.
1Peckforton Castle
Near Tarporley · Cheshire countrysideA Grade I-listed, medieval-style castle in 600 acres of ancient woodland, with red sandstone walls, vaulted dining rooms and open fires. There are four licensed ceremony rooms, a wedding breakfast for up to 165 and evening parties for up to 350, plus 48 bedrooms so the celebration can carry on with your guests staying over.
Big stone rooms and a sense of occasion suit a full horn section perfectly. The band sounds huge without you needing to push the volume, and with everyone staying on site, nobody has to rush off before the last song.
2Sandhole Oak Barn
Near Congleton · 400 acres of farmlandA family-run, exclusive-use barn in 400 acres near Congleton, with its own private lake. The Oak Barn has mellow beams, wrought iron chandeliers and full-length windows, seating up to 140 for the wedding breakfast and 180 for the evening. You can marry inside the barn or under the Clock Tower by the lake, and there are 17 bedrooms on site, including a honeymoon cottage.
Oak beams and a proper barn dancefloor are made for a party band, and a lakeside drinks reception is the perfect setting for roaming brass before everyone heads inside.
3The Oak Tree of Peover
Lower Peover · Near KnutsfordA bespoke oak-framed barn on a 30-acre estate in Lower Peover. Two rooms are licensed for ceremonies: the Ladybird Room, with views over the grounds, and the larger Acorn Room, with floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights and fairy lights. Guests gather in the Acorn Bar by a real log fire, the evening takes up to 180, and a dedicated coordinator looks after you in the months before the day.
The Acorn Room is bright and open, giving a 9-piece space to set up properly, and with two licensed rooms, an acoustic singer and guitarist can play your ceremony in one while the other is made ready for the party.
4Merrydale Manor
Knutsford · Country estateA country manor in Over Peover, near Knutsford, reached by a tree-lined drive through parkland, with landscaped gardens and a lake for outdoor ceremonies. It's always exclusive use, the chandelier-lit Merrydale suite and bar takes up to 220 in the evening, and 19 bedrooms let your closest guests stay over.
Exclusive use means the evening runs to your timings, and the high ceilings of the Merrydale suite give a full horn section room to sound big and polished from the first song.
5Dorfold Hall
Just outside Nantwich · Historic estateA Grade I-listed Jacobean country house built between 1616 and 1621, set in historic parkland with a lake and gardens. Alongside it is L'Écurie, a modern events building that won RIBA North West Building of the Year, with a walled courtyard of olive and fruit trees, plus the 200-year-old Coach House with its chandelier and gallery, and the intimate Tack Room bar.
L'Écurie is a contemporary space made for celebrating, which suits a full band perfectly, while the historic house gives you the elegance for the earlier part of the day.
6Owen House Wedding Barn
Mobberley · Near KnutsfordA family-run barn on a working farm in Mobberley, converted in 2013. There's a separate ceremony room for up to 150, the barn for up to 190 at the wedding breakfast, two orchard paddocks, a pagoda in the gardens and plenty of fun extras, from the Shooting Gallery with its 40ft wall of fairy lights to the "Baa-BER shed" with table football and a beer fridge. Up to 36 guests can stay on site.
It's relaxed, characterful and all about having a good time, which is exactly the crowd a party band loves. The barn fills with sound, and the outdoor patio is perfect for roaming brass during welcome drinks.
Other Cheshire venues we've played
Those six are our favourites, but they're far from the only ones. We've also performed at:
…and plenty more across Chester, Knutsford, Wilmslow, Nantwich and the rest of the county.
What to ask your venue before booking a band
Every venue has its own way of doing things, so it pays to check a few details with your coordinator early on:
- Are there any noise rules?Ask whether there's a sound limiter, and whether doors and windows need to stay shut later on. Our guide to sound limiters at Cheshire wedding venues explains what to look out for.
- How much room is there for the band?A flat, covered area of roughly 6m x 3m with two 13 amp sockets on separate circuits is ideal, but we've squeezed into far tighter spots, so ask us if space is short.
- Will we eat and dance in the same room?If so, we'll set up once the speeches are over. Allow about an hour for that, plus a few minutes for us to change.
- When does the music finish?Knowing the finish time lets us shape the sets so the best of the night comes at the end.
- How close can we park to the stage? Most country venues are easy, but barns and estates sometimes mean a long carry from the car park, so it's worth checking early.
Music all day longMany Cheshire couples make the most of the gardens by spreading the music through the day: an acoustic singer and guitarist for the vows, roaming brass on the lawn with the drinks, a relaxed playlist over dinner, then the full band, with our DJ booth to round off the night.
