The best Chester wedding venues for a live band
Six Chester venues we rate for a wedding with live music, from a historic house by the Dee and the oldest racecourse in the world to Chester Zoo and a 1,000-acre estate, and what to ask before you book.
Chester packs a lot into a small city: Roman walls, the black-and-white Rows, the racecourse on the Roodee and the River Dee, with country houses and estates just outside. Couples can marry in the middle of all that history or a few minutes away in the countryside, and each choice gives a live band something different to work with.
The size of the room, where the band sets up, any noise limit and the time the music stops all shape how your evening goes. We are a 9-piece wedding band in Chester with a live horn section, playing Soul, Funk, R&B, Motown and Pop. Here are six Chester venues we rate for a wedding with live music, and what makes each one work.
1Old Palace Chester
City centre · By the River DeeA historic venue on Little St John Street, a short walk from the Roman walls, the cathedral and the River Dee. Ceremonies for up to 150 can be held in the Ballroom, on the Garden Terrace or in the River Room, the old Bishop's chapel. The Ballroom seats 150 for dinner, up to 200 join for the evening, and 22 bedrooms plus the Palace Suite sleep up to 55.
The party happens indoors, across the Ballroom, Arrival Hall and bar, with the music winding down at 11.30pm. Brass and drums are not allowed outside, so if you want horns at the drinks reception, we bring them indoors.
2Chester Racecourse
City centre · The RoodeeThe oldest racecourse in the world, with races held on the Roodee since 1539, right beside the city walls. Weddings use a choice of spaces across the course, from the Champagne Bar for ceremonies to the Long Room, with its high ceilings and natural light, the Paddock Rooms and the 1539 Roof and Lounge. Parking is free for guests, and there is a hotel on site.
Big, bright rooms suit a full band with live horns, and with several spaces to move between, the night can flow from drinks to dinner to dancing without anyone leaving the course.
3Chester Zoo
Upton-by-ChesterTwo Grade II listed buildings at the heart of the zoo. The Square, an extension of the original 1931 stable block, holds up to 200 in its main space and up to 380 across the whole venue. The Oakfield, the Victorian mansion the zoo's founder moved into in 1930, takes up to 80 for the day and 120 in the evening. Guests can explore the zoo between the ceremony and the reception.
The Square is built for a big party, with room for the full band and a busy dancefloor, and the Oakfield suits a smaller wedding. Either way, it is a day your guests will talk about for years.
4Rowton Hall
Rowton · Edge of ChesterA country house hotel dating back to 1779 on the edge of the city, with landscaped gardens, a Victorian walled garden and a woodland walk. Ceremonies can be held in the Inglenook Suite or the Adams Lounge, and the Ballroom seats up to 200 for dinner, with up to 250 in the evening. The Orangery looks out over the gardens, and 39 bedrooms and a spa mean guests can make a weekend of it.
A proper ballroom gives a horn section room to breathe, and with most guests able to stay over, there is no rush for taxis before the last song.
5Grosvenor Pulford
Pulford · South of ChesterA hotel and spa just south of Chester, close to the Welsh border, with a lakeside gazebo for outdoor ceremonies. The Grosvenor Suite, refurbished in 2022, takes up to 200 guests, seating 180 for dinner, while the Belgrave and Westminster Suites suit smaller weddings. Guests can use the spa and pool the next morning.
A large, modern suite makes setting up a 9-piece straightforward, with plenty of room for the dancefloor, and live music is welcome.
6Carden Park
Near Broxton · South of ChesterA country estate of around 1,000 acres south of Chester, with an outdoor pavilion and a licensed gazebo by the lake. The Carden Suite, with its twinkle-light ceiling, seats up to 300 for dinner, and the Shooting Suite offers a beamed space with its own bar. With 197 bedrooms, almost all your guests can stay, and the music can run until 1am.
A late finish means time for two full band sets and our DJ booth after, and the Carden Suite has room for the full band and a big dancefloor.
More Chester wedding venues
Those six are a great starting point, and there are plenty more in and around the city that suit a live band, including:
…and many more in the villages around the city, from Christleton and Waverton to Eccleston and Tattenhall.
What to ask your venue before booking a band
Before you sign with a Chester venue, ask your coordinator a few questions about live music:
- Is there a sound limiter or a noise limit?Historic city buildings and big estates often have one, and it can cut the power if the volume goes too high. Our guide to sound limiters at Cheshire wedding venues explains what to look out for.
- What time does the music finish? Some city-centre venues finish around 11.30pm, while some estates run to 1am.
- Where will the band set up?The ideal is a flat, covered area of about 6m x 3m with two 13 amp sockets on separate circuits. We can work with less, so tell us if space is tight.
- Can music be played outside? Some city venues do not allow brass or drums outdoors, so check before planning horns on the terrace.
- How far is the stage from where we park?City-centre streets and big estates can both mean a long carry, so ask about access for the band.
Music all dayFrom a city church to the walled garden: an acoustic singer and guitarist for the vows, roaming brass with the drinks, a relaxed playlist over dinner, then the full band and our DJ booth to finish. See our wedding packages.
