The best Shropshire wedding venues for a live band
Six Shropshire venues we rate for a wedding with live music, from a Grade I listed hall and a castle to oak-framed barns, and what to ask before you book.
Shropshire weddings are mostly country weddings: Georgian houses in their own parkland, a castle outside Shrewsbury, and centuries-old barns on working farms, spread from the Welsh border to the hills around Ludlow and Bridgnorth. Each one gives a live band something different to work with.
The size of the room, where the band sets up, any noise limit and the time the music stops all shape how your evening goes. We are a 9-piece wedding band in Shropshire with a live horn section, playing Soul, Funk, R&B, Motown and Pop. Here are six Shropshire venues we rate for a wedding with live music, and what makes each one work.
1Hawkstone Hall and Gardens
Marchamley · 88-acre estateAn 18th-century Grade I listed country house near Shrewsbury, reached by a mile-long drive through 88 acres of parkland and gardens. It reopened as a wedding venue in 2018 after two years of restoration. Ceremonies can be held in the Chapel or outdoors, the Ballroom and the Saloon host the celebrations, with dinner for up to 170 and up to 200 in the evening, and 35 bedrooms sleep around 72 guests.
Grand rooms with high ceilings give a horn section real space to breathe, and with most of your guests staying in the hall, the party can carry on to the last song with nobody watching the clock for a taxi.
2Rowton Castle
Near Shrewsbury · 27 acresA Grade II listed castle dating back to the 17th century, in 27 acres of gardens and parkland just west of Shrewsbury. Outdoor ceremonies take place at the 18th-century Linden Belvedere, with the Coach House licensed too, and the Regency Ballroom, Georgian Dining Room and Cardeston Suite host the rest of the day. It seats 110 for dinner and holds 150 in the evening, with 19 bedrooms including a honeymoon suite, and the whole castle is yours for the day.
The band sets up in the Cardeston Suite and plays until 11.30pm, with a DJ able to carry on until midnight. We plan the sets around that timing, so the night builds to a big finish rather than stopping mid-flow.
3Davenport House
Worfield · Near BridgnorthA Grade I listed Georgian country house in the village of Worfield, just outside Bridgnorth. Ceremonies for up to 150 can be held indoors or outside, the house seats 150 for dinner and holds up to 200 in the evening, and nine bedrooms plus cottages in the grounds sleep around 40. The bar and music finish at midnight.
Davenport House sets a noise limit for live bands, so ask the venue for the current figure. We have played plenty of venues with a limit, using in-ear monitors and an electronic drum kit to keep the volume down while the dancefloor stays full.
4The Barns at Delbury Hall
Diddlebury · Near Craven ArmsA Georgian mansion in 80 acres of gardens and parkland in the south Shropshire hills, still a family home. Weddings centre on the Coach House, converted in 2007, with a pagoda by the lake for ceremonies. It holds up to 135 guests for the ceremony, the meal and the evening, and ten bedrooms in the converted Stables sleep 22. The venue is booked for exclusive use.
With the same guests from the vows to the last dance, it suits a wedding where everyone is there for the whole day. A full band fits comfortably, and live music is welcome.
5Burlton Manor
Burlton · North ShropshireA restored 17th-century barn with exposed beams and stone floors, in the countryside north of Shrewsbury. The barn holds up to 150 guests, with a courtyard, terrace and Secret Garden outside, and the manor house, cottages, barn rooms and glamping pods sleep up to around 66 adults. It was named Best Barn Wedding Venue in the West Midlands at The Wedding Industry Awards 2024, and the music finishes at midnight at weekends.
Live music is part of the plan here, and a beamed barn with stone floors gives a horn section a lovely warm sound. With so many guests sleeping on site, nobody has to leave before the last song.
6Pimhill Barn at Lea Hall
Harmer Hill · Near ShrewsburyA restored 16th-century oak-framed barn on a working farm just north of Shrewsbury, with an adjoining second barn, gardens, woodland and a small lake. Ceremonies for up to 120 are usually held in the second barn, and the main barn holds up to 150 for dinner and dancing. The venue is booked for exclusive use over more than one day, and it is licensed until 1am.
Live music is welcome, and with a late licence there is time for two full band sets and the DJ booth after. Guests do not stay on site, but there is a hotel a short walk away.
More Shropshire wedding venues
Those six are a great starting point, and there are plenty more across the county that suit a live band, including:
…and many more around Shrewsbury, Telford, Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Market Drayton and Church Stretton. We have also played Iscoyd Park, just over the Welsh border near Whitchurch.
What to ask your venue before booking a band
Before you sign with a Shropshire venue, ask your coordinator a few questions about live music:
- Is there a sound limiter or a noise limit?Listed houses and rural venues often have one, and it can cut the power if the volume goes too high. Our guide to sound limiters at Shropshire wedding venues explains what to look out for.
- What time does the music finish?Finish times vary a lot, from 11.30pm to 1am, and some venues have one time for the band and a later one for a DJ.
- Where will the band set up?The ideal is a flat, covered area of about 6m x 3m with two 13 amp sockets on separate circuits. We can work with less, so tell us if space is tight.
- Is the party in the same room as the meal?If it is, we set up once the speeches are over. That takes about an hour, plus a few minutes for the band to change.
- How far is the stage from where we park?Long drives, courtyards and old barns can mean a long carry, so ask about access for the band.
Music all dayShropshire gardens and courtyards are made for spreading the music through the day: an acoustic singer and guitarist for the vows, roaming brass on the lawn with the drinks, a relaxed playlist over dinner, then the full band and our DJ booth to finish. See our wedding packages.
